1. Llum BCN: El Poblenou lights up (literally)

When: February 2–4.
Where: Poblenou neighbourhood.

Forget the usual streetlights. The Poblenou neighbourhood turns into a spaceship of light art. It’s the perfect time to take those photos that will make your Instagram followers seriously jealous. Mind-blowing installations and an atmosphere that only happens once a year. That said, come back to Blanc afterwards and take shelter from all that light — it can be exhausting.

Santa Eulàlia: The Festa Major for people who hate crowds

When: Around February 12.
Where: Gothic Quarter and surrounding areas.

If you thought festivals in Barcelona were only a summer thing, you clearly haven’t met “La Laia”. It’s the city’s winter Festa Major: giant figures, correfocs (fire and adrenaline) and human towers. The rebellious twist: the best part isn’t just the dancing. There are also open days at museums and historic buildings that would normally cost you a small fortune. It’s your chance to get into some incredible places for free and then spend what you saved on a luxurious dinner.

3. Candlelight: Music by candlelight (without the cheesy stuff)

When: Various dates in February.
Where: Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi or Sant Pau Hospital.

If you want to impress, this is the place. Tribute concerts to Coldplay, Queen or Taylor Swift surrounded by thousands of candles. Romantic, yes, but with a rockstar edge that makes it irresistible. 4. Carnival: Tortilla, costumes and whatever happens next

When: February 12–22.

Barcelona goes a little crazy. It’s time to eat truita de botifarra d’ou until you can’t manage another bite and let yourself get swept up in the neighbourhood Rues (parades).
